The 7 Reasons Why Sheep and Beef Farmers Don't Make Profit

profit squeeze

Crazy challenges in the sheep and beef farming industry threaten the profitability and success of farming businesses. Livestock market values and climate movements vary wildly and appear to show no mercy. The current structure marketing meat and wool isn’t delivering for those with the most at stake in the industry – the farmers. These things are very real but they’re nowhere near the biggest reasons farmers aren’t profitable.

These will always affect businesses to some degree – that’s the nature of farming business. However, the low hanging fruit for farm business improvement are all things that farmers can DIRECTLY control REGARDLESS of the above factors.

Unfortunately, most farmers lack this understanding so the focus often goes onto those factors that they generally want to believe (or are told) are their biggest issues. Why? Because it is easier to blame things you can’t do anything about, as you then don’t have to take responsibility for doing anything about them! The questionable motives of some organisations who promote these non-direct-controllables as the big issues are a whole topic of their own, but ultimately responsibility must be taken by the business owners!

More than 13 years coaching New Zealand farmers in their businesses and a lifetime in the industry have revealed to me 7 Key Reasons that cause sheep and beef farm businesses to deliver poor and inconsistent profits year to year. They can apply anywhere, on any farm and to anyone. When farmers understand them and use the right systems to overcome them, solid profits can flow every year regardless of the conditions that the season throws their way. The cool thing is that any farmer who wants to improve themselves and their business badly enough can do it!

What are the 7 Reasons Why Sheep and Beef Farmers Don’t Make Profit? Here is a sneak peek at 3 of them:

Reason #1 - Not being clear about where they are heading and why

Reason #2 - Not being clear about what profit is and how profit is made in a sheep and beef farm business

Reason #6 - Not taking profitable actions

What are the other 4 reasons and what are the details of each of the 7 Reasons?  I’m offering you the opportunity to find out.

  • I am curious. I am very keen to succeed. I am on the verge of starting a mixed beef cattle and sheep farming business. I have been searching high and low for ways to make my business profitable. The planning must preceed the farming practice itself. I had many questions that need to be answered: why are farmers of beef cattle and sheep failing?

  • The farmers using GrowFarm are a very happy bunch, oozing confidence, and knowing that they are running their businesses, and not having the meat industry running them!
Even if you've been farming forever, if you are still thinking of yourself as 'just a farmer' and not as running a multi-million dollar agribusiness, you are doing yourself down.
And remember that GrowFarm users get more free time, as well as meeting challenges with power and knowledge.
