Time management or life management?

Why do we often find ourselves rushing around trying to get a million things done in a day, only to collapse at day’s end and repeat it over tomorrow? Perhaps you feel you never seem to start that certain project you really should be starting. Maybe you get everything done but much later than you wanted to and with a lot more hassle.

This is a common cause of frustration in life and especially in running a farming business. The farm work, the kids activities and our other appointments are all screaming for our attention. We always hear about “time management” and how we must do it. Most of us agree with the need for it but never seem to find the time to start any time management techniques!

Most often, poor time management is an indicator of a deeper issue; it is not the problem in itself. When we rush around doing everything we think we must do to participate in life and farming, it is so easy to get busy being busy. Time passes and we can feel quite stagnant and unfulfilled, drifting aimlessly with seemingly little purpose. There are however, those who take the time to identify what is most important to them in life overall and then do what is most important day to day to achieve that. They tend to find a more peaceful and organised existence, get things done and still have time to enjoy their hobbies or time with people most important to them. See the difference?

Who are these people? It doesn’t really matter as much as how they manage to achieve this. The best way to describe this is “Life Management” or “Personal Leadership.” These people identify their highest priorities and then pour (yes pour!) their energies into doing or achieving those things. They align their actions with their highest priorities. Why? Simply because those things are most important to them above all else! We have 24 hours per day available to each and every one of us – what makes the difference? They actually flush or cull the irrelevant stuff!

This drafting or thinning out process means that tasks or goals that are definitely relevant can have energy allocated to them. Tasks or goals that are irrelevant can be removed from their attention altogether. It also allows them to feel great about what they are doing because they are making a worthwhile difference to themselves and to those who are important to them. Positive feelings help to provide even more positive thoughts as well as physical ease and health. Results always improve and life is continually exciting. This is what is meant by successful Life Management or Personal Leadership!

Many people who don’t operate this way often use excuses to justify inaction down this path. Whatever the excuse is, it will work and they will continue to operate the same way as usual. Poor results will stick around. Don’t let this be your choice. Take action and make life pay off on your terms!

What to keep in or draft out for you is entirely up to you but know that there is a structured process to follow to build this positive habit. This process, and how you can use it, will be covered in next month's GrowFARM Connector. Until then, if you need help in this area, know that there is a way forward. You can achieve anything if you want it badly enough!
