The discipline to follow through

Successful farm business people understand that great results only come if they do everything possible to achieve them. Farmers who get poor results (or sporadic results at best) usually do not grasp this concept until they take a huge financial or emotional hit, and even then it may not happen! With this in mind would it not be beneficial to place yourself in the success realm?

In his great little book titled “The Common Denominator of Success,” Albert Gray wrote that “The secret of success of every man who has ever been successful lies in the fact that he formed the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do.” Dwell on this for at least a few seconds. Gray goes on to write that the successful person doesn’t necessarily like to do those things either as they don’t feel natural to anyone! His explanation for this is “Successful people are influenced by the desire for pleasing results. Failures are influenced by the desire for pleasing methods and are inclined to be satisfied with such results as can be obtained by doing things they like to do.”

Right there is the answer to why we do or don’t get the results we really want. As to how to do this, let’s examine a few points relevant to our farm businesses.

Firstly, we need to have a strong goal to aim for and a meaningful reason for being disciplined in our approach. Secondly, we need to get on and do those things that others don’t like to do. That’s it – end of story! Simple but not obvious! It can be challenging but entirely worth the effort due to the self reliance, self confidence and results gained from it.

A strong goal might be “Purchase the farm from the family and have the freedom to pursue our family and business dreams,” or “Eliminate debt, allow for infrastructure maintenance and replacement, providing ease of management,” or some other goal – whatever spins your wheels. Your strong reason / purpose / mission might be “to provide extra cash to support a heartfelt cause personally and financially.” Perhaps you just want “freedom from the tie to having to be on the farm almost all the time.” Whatever your reason, make it strong and make it worth the effort required.

It takes a structured process to do everything possible to achieve the goal. It then takes step by step execution of this process. This increases your chances of success so greatly that you almost ensure there is no other outcome except the one you really want. You need the mental environment of personal initiative and accountability; the systems and processes that clarify, simplify, educate, inspire and deliver; the preparation to execute well; and then you need to execute well!

For example, you might form a mastermind group or governance team to help you. You might fill your mind with success principles by reading books, listening to audio programmes or watching video of successful people for at least 15 minutes every day. You may hire a coach or friend to help you stay accountable to your goals.

You could take on systems such as GrowFARM and study the Profit Equation and the 6 Profit Principles. You could learn the intricacies of them by following them exactly as designed. You could use the online GrowFARM ProfitLIVE system to provide instant analysis of profitable livestock scenarios well before they are due to occur. Rubbing shoulders with others on the same path can provide a marked increase in confidence that your new actions will get you to where you want to be. Your strategic business plan can be defined simply and effectively – this will provide the roadmap for the other concepts mentioned to be implemented. If you stay true to carrying out this preparation, then why wouldn’t you achieve the goal?

Or, you could not do any of this and hope for the best.

Either way it is your call. Heed paragraph 2 above when choosing which path you will follow. Choose the success realm and as a bi-product you will be disciplined and you will follow through. What will you choose?
