While speaking recently with sheep and beef farmers in Southland, it was confirmed to me just how important personal confidence really is in sheep and beef farming. As we discussed farming and what opportunities people saw for themselves and their businesses, two distinct lines of thought emerged out of two completely different thinking environments.
On one hand, those who perceived farming to be quite challenging and at the mercy of outside influences (such as the climate, the exchange rate, the mood the meat companies were in, the meat schedule and grass growth among others) were a bit on edge and not really willing to back themselves or their business results by year end. They wondered about many things such as what to do when, the threat of land use change to dairy farming and whether they would have to join in the dairy scene by converting or grazing when they didn't really want to. There seemed to be an underlying stress present with uncertainty being a large part of discussion.
The other group, who perceived farming to be a series of solid business decisions based on sound logic and principles (and therefore reasonably straightforward) were very relaxed with a large degree of confidence about the season. They also were confident about their own abilities. They were not boastful or overconfident - more quietly confident and a lot more certain about the options open to them regardless of what the season might bring. They had a much higher degree of certainty in the outcome, even if the things changed that they couldn't control. They had confidence looking ahead, rather than lack of confidence.
The difference appeared to be that one group had accurate knowledge and a reliable method for moving through the season in their farm businesses (how to proceed and create great results). The other group had a lot less sheep and beef farm business knowledge and method, apart from doing the same old same old and hoping it worked out in the end. With multi-million dollar businesses on the line, lack of knowledge, lack of method and lack of confidence does not point to positive outcomes!
