The current NZ Farming environment is challenging to say the least! Prices are variable, profit is elusive and debt is crippling many businesses. Pub talk is negative, rural publications report a fair measure of agro and lack of trust, while the climate is delivering some interesting curve balls.
Beware the doom and gloom out there! Why? Because the more you focus on it and become embroiled in it, the more you bring it into reality in your own business and mind! As a farm business owner in control of millions of dollars of asset, you can’t afford for this to happen.
Let’s discuss a common misconception. Many perceive profit to be tied to the price they receive for their products. This perception definitely needs adjusting! For one thing, price can certainly affect profit but there are other things that do as well. Profit = Income – Expenses and profit can vary at different times of the year. Lack of understanding of this equation will result in confusion and haphazard outcomes. Another point on the perception that profit equals price relates to what happens over the long term. Over 10 or 20 years, it is reasonable to expect that on average prices will be up half the time and prices will be down the other half. If you add a plus for half the time to a minus for the other half, what do you get? That’s right, ZERO! So why work hard and end up with little to show for it. All that ends up happening is that you feel pushed or driven by your business.
Now I know as much as anyone that it is challenging when you have been operating a certain way for a long time and you then get fed up with it. That happens to all of us at some point. But to keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result is incredibly unhelpful! I believe Mr Einstein used slightly simpler language when coining the popular phrase to this effect.
At some point we have to jolt ourselves out of that mindset and own our own minds. Only then can you plot a course for a vastly different result and future. You need to seek out a culture that helps you stay in charge of your business, your mind and decision making that will deliver for you. GrowFARM was built for such a reason.
Please understand though that to obtain new results requires new thinking, new actions and new habits which all go towards strengthening your character. You must be prepared to pay that price. If not, you must be prepared to accept the environment and results you currently dwell in. Either way, don’t whinge about it – make a decision and get on with it!
So ask yourself – are you driving your business, or is your business driving you? This is one question you cannot sit on the fence with. Fence sitting only ensures that you move to one of those options by default anyway. No prizes for guessing which one!
